Principal's Message

KHonaker.jpg Dear Holston High School Community,

I would like to welcome all of you to our Holston High School family.  I say family because most of the students that we teach have parents and grandparents who attended this very school. The Holston community is a proud, strong community full of history and tradition.  I am honored to be a part of that pride, strength and tradition serving as Principal of Holston High School.

With over 50 years of experience and tradition, our Vision—“enabling each student to achieve their highest academic, social, and physical potential in order to become responsible and productive citizens” guides and inspires our faculty and staff to achieve excellence in teaching and learning.

We appreciate and embrace the opportunity to serve your students.  We encourage you to become an active participant in your student’s educational journey!  I thank all of you for your continued support and for your commitment to the students that we serve.

Holston High School’s art classes have launched a brand new project.  The class will be doing a mural to help decorate the wall outside the classroom.  The mural will represent both seasonal and interesting current themes.  To kick off the year, the class painted the phases of the recent eclipse.  A total solar eclipse recurs only once every decade or so over the Northern Hemisphere.  After the August 21, 2017 event, the U.S. will not see another total eclipse until 2024.  All of Holston’s students viewed the occurrence through their specialized “eclipse glasses”.  The art class was inspired by the event and came back to create the mural.

Ms. Jessie Smith is the teacher. K. Finley and E. Sullivan were the student leaders of the project.

The Holston High Cross Country Team has enjoyed continued success this season.  The team members include Kealey R., Hayden L., and Ryland H. for the Ladies along with Jordan O., Kaiden F., Dylan T., Miles H., Jordan K., & Carson B. for the Guys.  On Tuesday, October 24th, the three ladies each finished individually in the top six, while the guys team was the district runner up, led by the Hogoheegee individual champion Jordan K.  The team placed in the Regional event to qualify for the state championships to be held on Veteran's Day at the Great Meadow Course in The Plains, VA.  With the guys qualifying as a team, this will mark the first time in 26 years that Holston has sent an entire team to state when former Cavalier Marching Band Director, Uley Daniels coached the 1991 Girls team.  Congratulations to this years cross country team members and best of luck to them in the State Finals.

The Holston FFA traveled to Springfield, MA this September for the Eastern States Exposition which is also known as the Big E.  The Big E is a regional fair for several New England states.   FFA events are held for teams that placed 2nd in their state Career Development Event from the previous year.  This year Holston represented Virginia in the Parliamentary Procedure Leadership Development Event where they placed 1st over seven other state teams.

In parliamentary procedure, FFA members must take a written exam on parliamentary law, perform a demonstration of a formal business meeting, and follow rules of debate.  Students that competed were Maggie B., Allie C., Morgan K., Trayton M., Marissa P., and Morgan T. Congratulations to these students for their success at the Big E.
