Principal's Message

KHonaker.jpg Dear Holston High School Community,

I would like to welcome all of you to our Holston High School family.  I say family because most of the students that we teach have parents and grandparents who attended this very school. The Holston community is a proud, strong community full of history and tradition.  I am honored to be a part of that pride, strength and tradition serving as Principal of Holston High School.

With over 50 years of experience and tradition, our Vision—“enabling each student to achieve their highest academic, social, and physical potential in order to become responsible and productive citizens” guides and inspires our faculty and staff to achieve excellence in teaching and learning.

We appreciate and embrace the opportunity to serve your students.  We encourage you to become an active participant in your student’s educational journey!  I thank all of you for your continued support and for your commitment to the students that we serve.

The Interact Club at Holston High School recently completed a major community service project.  In cooperation with Patrick Henry High School, the club launched a friendly competition between their respective first period classes.  The individual class that collected the most canned foods for Abingdon Faith in Action was rewarded with a morning doughnut party.

In all, the two schools collected 515 cans of food for the underprivileged.  Mrs. Brittany Mullins’ class demonstrated exceptional motivation and brought in 138 cans.  Their total contribution eclipsed the next highest class by over 50 cans.

The Yearbook Class helped with the project by developing posters to promote the event.  Holston High School’s faculty and Staff commend the Interact Club for its successful proactive community project.

The U.S. History and Government classes at Holston High School recently had the opportunity to hear from and speak with Congressman Morgan Griffith.  Griffith, who represents Virginia’s 9th District in the U.S. House of Representatives, came to HHS on September 21st and spoke with the students for over an hour.  The congressman explained the different components of his job, from constituent services to voting on appropriation bills.  Students asked questions related to politics as well as governing.  Some students asked questions about the upcoming presidential election.  Congressman Griffith explained the nominating process to them.

Both the students and Congressman Griffith enjoyed the exchange.  Teachers Jeff Blevins, Julie Matlock, and Scott Hill salute the congressman for making the effort to reach out to students in the rural parts of his district.

Danielle B., a senior at Holston High School, has been a volleyball standout and an anchor for her team.  As a freshman playing junior varsity, Danielle had over 200 assists.  That was a sign of things to come.  Danielle joined the varsity as a sophomore and led the team in assists every year.
The big moment came for Danielle just before the end of the first game of the set against Chilhowie High School on September 24th.  She is the first HHS volleyball player to reach the milestone. Head Coach Natasha Overbay and the HHS Volleyball Team salute Danielle on her proud moment.
