Holston FFA Receives FFA: Food for All Grant
The Holston FFA chapter in Damascus, Virginia has been awarded $2,500 as part of the FFA: Food For All program. The nationwide program provides grant money to local FFA chapters to support year-long service-learning projects that address local hunger needs.
The Holston FFA plans to help fight hunger by building six raised beds to start a community garden. Students in the Horticulture classes at Holston High School will be constructing the raised beds and the surrounding landscape. Students will be cultivating vegetables crops where all of the food harvested will be donated to the soup kitchen at Feeding America Southwest Virginia located in Abingdon, Virginia. One goal of this project is to help FFA members learn the importance of community service and the value of helping those in need. Every student that participates in the after school portion of this project will be able to count the hours towards the community service requirement of the Washington County Community Scholars and FFA degree programs.
The FFA: Food For All Grants are sponsored by Donaldson Foundation, Elanco, Land O’Lakes, Nationwide Foundation, Nutra Blend, Sealed Air, Tractor Supply Company and Tyson as a special project of the National FFA Foundation. The program provided nearly $360,000 to FFA chapters in 40 states and the Virgin Islands. In addition, the FFA: Food For All grant program is part of the National FFA Organization’s Hunger Home platform. More information about the program can be found at FFA.org/foodforall.
