Holston’s Gray is Athletic Director of the Year

Years of hard work and dedication have paid off for HHS’s Travis Gray.  On March 31, 2017, he was named the 1A/ 2A High School Athletic Director of the Year.  His selection was announced at the 45th Annual Awards Ceremony for the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators’ Association. Gray was named the school’s athletic director on a part-time basis in 2009 and assumed the duties full-time in 2012.  He served as the school’s head basketball coach from 2004 to 2012 and was the assistant varsity baseball coach from 2004 to 2008.  During his college years, he played baseball for the Emory and Henry Wasps.  After earning his Bachelor’s degree from E&H in 1999, he added a MA in Mathematics from the University of Virginia in 2007.  He completed his Masters in Administration from Radford University this spring.

Some of his proudest achievements include hosting 10 conference athletic tournaments, 3 regional tournaments, and 1 state tournament.  HHS hosted the State Golf Tournament in 2013.  Incidentally, HHS golfers won the state tournament that same year.  Under his direction, the Holston athletic program has received both the Claudia Dotson Sportsmanship Award and the “Stay in the Game” Award for 4 consecutive years (2012-16).  The former award is given to a school that demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship throughout an entire school year.  The latter award is given to schools who have no player or coaches ejected from a game during a year.

The faculty and staff of Holston High School salute Mr. Gray on his well-deserved award.
