HHS Teacher Receives State Recognition

Joy Munsey, economics and personal finance teacher at Holston High School, has been named a recipient of Virginia Credit Union’s Teacher of the Quarter recognition program.  The program recognizes K-12 teachers who teach economics and personal finance in Virginia.  Mrs. Munsey won $250 from Virginia Credit Union in appreciation of her work.  HHS Principal, Kendra Addison, surprised her by announcing her award at the very end of a faculty meeting earlier this month.  In addition to economics and personal finance, Joy also teaches computer information systems. An educator for more than two decades, she is in her 12th year in Washington County.

“I am proud that Virginia has stepped up and made economics and personal finance a requirement for graduation. Not every state has. I know my students will use this information in their daily lives. It is certainly one of the most important things we can stress before they leave high school.”  Joy considers insurance and investing to be the most difficult concepts for her students to grasp, while the unit on credit and general money management is perhaps the most important.  “We stress saving, of budgeting, paying yourself first and the importance of your credit history. We want them to be able to distinguish among lenders and products to avoid being taken advantage of.”

This is the second quarterly award Virginia Credit Union has given since announcing the program in January.  “Financial education is a key priority for us,” said Chris Shockley, Virginia Credit Union’s President/CEO. “With this program, we are glad to do our part to recognize gifted educators who teach these critical skills to young people.”

A financial cooperative serving more than 254,000 members, Virginia Credit Union offers a variety of affordable banking services, loans, mortgages, and free financial education resources, with a focus on helping people be more confident with their finances. Virginia Credit Union is an equal housing opportunity lender and is federally insured by NCUA. For more information, visitwww.vacu.org.
