American Legion High School Oratorical Contest
Applicants must be enrolled in high school during the time of participation. This opportunity involves preparing and reciting a formal speech on some aspect of the Constitution, with emphasis on citizen’s duties and obligations to our government.
Armenian Education Center/Scholarship
This is an essay question contest which addresses the Holocaust and other examples of genocide. It is open to students in 9-12 grades and the winner is provided with a $1,000 scholarship. The deadline to apply is April 17th.
BBB Social Scholar Video Contest
Open to any grade level, this is a short video contest with the option of two different topics.  Award is in the amount of $500.  Deadline to submit video entry is March 26, 2020.  Follow this link for more information: 
Blue Ridge Job Corps
For any student who plans to attend Wytheville or Virginia Highlands Community College to study a health career. Contact Jordan Loupe ( He is willing to come to HHS and go over scholarship opportunities.
Blakenship/Justice Scholarship Fund
Recipients must be a child or dependent of a coal miner or a person seeking a degree in a field reasonably related to the promotion of coal mine safety and health. Applications are accepted each year until April 30th.
Bristol TN/VA Association of Realtors Scholarship – A 500-word essay contest on the topic of What Home Ownership Means to Me, open to current high school seniors.  Awards in the amount of $1,000, deadline to apply is March 31, 2020.  For an application or more information please see Mrs. Campbell.

Captain Earle Worley Scholarship Fund
Available to graduates of a public or private high school in Virginia that will be attending an accredited 2-4 year community college, college or university, or vocational school in the U.S. and plan to study aeronautics, aerospace, aviation, or related engineering. Link to enter will be available early 2020 and applications will be due early March of 2020.
Chad Weaver Aviation Scholarship Program
The program will reimburse the cost of a private pilot ground school/or private pilot flight training up to $450.00 at a Virginia flight school. The deadline is April 24, 2020.
Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation
The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation supports more than 1,400 exceptional college students each year, with annual scholarships of $3.55 million awarded through 3 nationally recognized programs.

College Board Opportunity Scholarships
The College Board Opportunity Scholarships is a different kind of scholarship program. Students don't have to write an essay, fill out an application, or have a specific GPA or test score. The program rewards students for simply completing the actions they need to take in order to apply to college.

Delete Cyberbullying Scholarship
An essay contest cover the question, why is it important to work to delete cyberbullying, or, how has cyberbullying personally affected you? The recipient will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
Dial My Calls Essay Scholarship
Current high school seniors with a GPA of 2.0 or above have the opportunity to win a scholarship in the amounts of 1st - $1,000,
2nd - $500, 3rd - $250. The essay topic is “What career are you pursuing and why?” and has a minimum of 750 words. The deadline to apply is January 8, 2020.
Dirk Derrick Car & Truck Accident Injury Scholarship 
A one time $1,000 award essay contest for any current or soon to be undergraduate student who has had their life altered by an injury from an automobile accident.  The deadline to apply is December 15th of each year.
East Tennessee Foundation Scholarships
This is a common application system used to determine eligibility for 61 different scholarship opportunities by filling out one application. Based on your answers to eligibility questions you will be provided with a list of East Tennessee Foundation scholarships you qualify for. Deadline to apply if February 15, 2020.

Farm Credit Scholarships 
Visit to learn more about the scholarship opportunities available through Farm Credit.  Check the website often as new deadlines have not yet been posted for some of the scholarships.
GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarships 
Eligible students must be a high school senior, demonstrate leadership, drive, integrity and citizenship, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be a citizen of the U.S., plan to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited four-year college. This opportunity rewards qualifying applicants with a $10,000 scholarship renewable for up to an additional three years or $40,000 total.

Janice M. Scott Memorial Scholarship Fund
Applicants must be a graduating senior who will enroll full time at a fully accredited four-year college or university, have a 3.0 GPA or higher, demonstrated leadership abilities in community service hours or extra-curricular activities, parents/guardians combined income must not exceed $50,000 a year. Deadline to apply is March 31, 2020.
Johnston Memorial Hospital Health Center Scholarship
Johnston Memorial Hospital is currently accepting applications for the Health Career Scholarship. This award will be given to a graduating senior from each Washington County high school and the Career & Technical Education Center who plans to pursue a health care career after graduation. Recipients will receive $500 in college tuition assistance for the 2020 fall semester. Following completion of their first year of college, the recipients will be eligible for an additional $500 in college tuition assistance, if he or she is in good academic standing (overall GPA of 3.0 or better) and still pursuing a health related career.  To apply, please see Mrs. Campbell in the guidance office.  Deadline - April 10th, 2020.
Johnston Memorial Ed Hill Scholar Athlete
In honor of Mr. Ed Hill, a long-time Johnston Memorial Hospital physical therapist and an active community advocate of high school athletics, the hospital will award a one-time $1000 grant to a college-bound senior from each of the Washington County high schools. To be a candidate for the award, you must have excelled in both academics and athletics during your high school career.  To apply, please see Mrs. Campbell in the guidance office.  Deadline - April 10th, 2020.
Justin Foundation Scholarship
Offered to a senior who demonstrates financial need, has documented community service hours, and has a minimum GPA of 2.5. The application deadline is April 19, 2020.
Moose "Heart of the Community" Scholarship Program
This application must be submitted in your Junior year of high school.  Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0, have a parent, step-parent, grandparent, or legal guardian who is a current member of the Moose, and demonstrate volunteer activities on behalf of the Loyal Order of the Moose.  The deadline to apply is June 30, 2020.  For more information, please visit the following link
National Honor Society Scholarship
If you are a member of the National Honor Society you can log into your account and apply for the 2019-2020 NHS scholarship.  Deadline is December 6, 2019.
National Merit Scholarship Program
High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT (PSAT/NMSQT) no later than their third year of high school. The student’s responses to items on the PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet instructions determine whether the individual meets requirements to participate. Score reports indicate whether the student has met program entry requirements.
PB&J Scholarship
Intended for seniors who may not have the best GPA and test scores but are motivated to succeed.  Awards in the amount of $500-$1,000.  Deadline to apply is May 31, 2020.  Visit the following website for more information
Prudential Spirit of Community Award
For students grades 9-12 who have volunteer hours over the past year. Qualifying candidates will receive the President’s Volunteer Service Award and will be eligible to earn a $1,000 scholarship plus much more! The application deadline is November 15, 2019.
Rotarian May Jo Craig “Service Above Self” Scholarships
The life of May Jo Craig, distinguished local Rotarian and beloved Clerk to the Washington County Public School System for decades, will be remembered through scholarships awarded by the Rotary Club of Abingdon, Virginia. May Jo Craig lived her life in accordance with the Rotary International motto “Service Above Self”, the philosophy that service to others is the highest calling one may aspire to in life. Graduating seniors from Abingdon, Holston, John Battle and Patrick Henry High Schools and the Washington County CTE Center who best exemplify this motto and Craig’s life of service will each be awarded a $750.00 educational scholarship.  Each applicant must fully complete the Rotarian May Jo Craig “Service Above Self” Scholarship Application and meet all the qualifications and criteria listed below for a scholarship to be awarded. No applicant directly related to any Abingdon Rotary Club member will be eligible to receive this award. The deadline for applications submitted to appropriate school guidance offices will be Friday, March 6, 2020 by close of school. Awarded scholarships will be presented to selected recipients during annual school awards ceremonies and recipients also will be invited to attend an Abingdon Rotary Club luncheon in late April or early May, 2020 to
be introduced and recognized by the Abingdon Rotary Club Membership.  See Mrs. Campbell for applications.
Scholars Helping Collars Essay Scholarship
Open to any full-time high school senior. Awards include 1st place of $1,500, 2nd place of $300, and 3rd place of $200. Second and third place winners also get the opportunity choose animal shelters to receive donated items. The deadline to apply is February 28, 2020.
Scooter Inside Scholarship Essay
This opportunity is open to all students and the selected applicant will be awarded $1,200.  Your essay must be 700 or more words on the topic of “How to improve your scooting experience or your best scooter adventure.”
On top of that applicants must submit a 1500 word (maximum) essay answering the following questions:
  1. How important is social media marketing for small businesses?
  2. How SEO (search engine optimization) can help local businesses to get more clients?
The deadline to apply is March 15, 2020 and applicants should send their essays to with the subject “Scooterinside Digital Marketing Scholarship.
Southwest Virginia Alliance for Manufacturing ScholarshipThe Southwest Virginia Alliance for Manufacturing is once again offering scholarship funding to students who wish to pursue a career in manufacturing. This scholarship can be used for post-secondary education in technical fields or for four-year degrees. Since manufacturing companies need individuals with a wide variety of education - from welding certificates to degrees such as marketing and chemistry - this scholarship can be used by students pursuing almost any degree. Keep in mind the important qualifying factor: Students must be interested in pursuing a career in manufacturing in Southwest Virginia.  Information can be found online at Please note: The deadline to apply is April 3rd.

The Society of Cincinnati in the State of Virginia
An essay contest open to any Virginia high school senior who plans to attend a 4-year college or university in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  Awards will be offered in the amounts of $3,000 - $6,000.  This year's essay topic is French Influence on the American Revolution.  Deadline to apply is March 13, 20202.  See Mrs. Campbell for more details.
The Travis W. Watkins Tax Resolution & Accounting Firm Scholarship
A one time $1,000 award essay contest for any student who had his or her family's life altered because of tax controversies.  The deadlines to apply are the last day in April and the last day in December of each year.
United Southwest Federal Credit Union
Open to all high school seniors with a minimum GPA of 2.5, a member of USFCU, and who have been accepted to an accredited college, university, or seminary as a full-time student.  Applicant must submit a one-page essay about their scholastic and community involvement.  Deadline to apply is March 12, 2020.
United States Senate Youth Program Scholarship
Two students per state will be selected for an opportunity to attend a week-long trip in Washington, DC in which they experience their national government in action. This scholarship is recommended for students interested in pursuing a career in public service. Selected applicants will also receive a scholarship for $10,000. The deadline to apply is September 27, 2019.
Virginia Council on Women 9th Annual STEM Essay and Scholarship Contest
The Virginia Department of Education will be awarding five scholarships (one in each geographic region) to qualifying high school seniors who will be pursuing a STEM education at an institution, trade, or technical school. Eligible students must be female or identify as female, have a GPA of at least a 3.0 for the merit-based awards, and a GPA of at least a 2.5 for the need-based awards. The deadline to submit your essay is January 10, 2020.

Virginia Military Institute Scholarship Program
High school seniors with a strong academic and well-balanced high school record may be eligible to become Institute Scholars.  Institute Scholars are awarded scholarship funds to supplement ROTC scholarships or other forms of financial aid to meet the full cost of VMI. 
Virginia School Counselor Association Essay Contest
Open to any senior who plans to attend a two or four year college or university, trade or technical program, or enlist in any branch of the military.  Applicant must write a one page essay of no more than 500 words about a school counselor, past or present, who has made a difference in your academic career, and/or social emotional development.  The recipient will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship and the deadline to apply is April 5, 2020.  Visit the guidance office to pick up an application.
Virginia Space Grant Consortium
A coalition of five Virginia colleges and universities that offers a wide range of programs and activities to high school students in relation to NASA's national space grant goals.  To learn more about year-long internships or grade level high school programs, please visit the web page.
Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program
Essay contest open to students in grades 9-12 and offered through the Veterans of Foreign Wars.  This scholarship requires you to record a 3-5 minute essay on an audio CD or flash drive and submit the recorded version as well as a typed version.  Local prizes are awarded in the amounts of 1st - $100, 2nd - $75, 3rd - $50.  Deadline is October 31, 2019.  See Mrs. Campbell in Guidance for an application.
Wace National Co-Op Scholarship Program
Essay contest for high school seniors with a GPA of 3.5 or higher who applied for admission for the 2020-2021 academic year at a college or university (the college or university must be on the list found in the application). Deadline to apply is February 15, 2020

Washington County Farm Bureau Scholarship 
The Outstanding Young Agriculturalist Award recognizes a high school junior or senior for outstanding academic, community and agribusiness achievement. The award also encourages students to evaluate their progress and career goals and to strive for leadership opportunities and involvement in the agribusiness sector.  The application can be found at
Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival & Guitar Competition

Willard G Plentl Aviation Scholarship Program
Student must be accepted into a non-engineering aviation related post secondary education program.  Applicants must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and complete a minimum 350 word essay.  Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000.  See Mrs. Campbell to apply.  The deadline is March 13, 2020.
Women in Science Environmental Scholarship
Available to female high school or college students who are pursuing a science degree.  Applicants must demonstrate financial need and submit a one page essay that demonstrates an idea you have for helping to improve the environment, either global or locally using Drone Technology.  The selected applicant will be awarded $500.
